Close Trillian, delete (or rename) existing skypekit.exe, download the new one in place, set it in Windows 7 compatibility mode, set trillian.exe in Windows 8.0 compatibility mode and you are done.
The trick works with 8.1 x64. You might be fooled by this: if you try to directly download skypekit.exe and replace the existing one, you might not get any warnings and think that it was actually replaced. But: 8.1 will not usually allow this (depends on type of account and UAC settings).
